Do you want help with routine woodland maintenance?
We need areas of woodland (large or small) anywhere in the UK to use for chainsaw training. Under the close supervision of our highly professional instructors, trainees would carry out maintenance and clearing work as agreed with the landowner.

We can provide training appropriate to whatever work being carried out. There are courses available at all levels. Below are a few of the more commonly run courses. Please note that all these courses can be run together in combinations to suit your needs. Prices given are for a single individual for that particular unit. If you need more than one unit, or have more than one person to be trained there will be discounts available. MAINTENANCE AND CROSSCUTTING

The course is suitable for:- Those who need to operate chainsaws for cross cutting only. The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate of competence CS30.

Duration: Two days

Maximum trainees: 4

Price:-£250 per head. (Discounts available)

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • state and identify the necessary personal protective equipment required, report on its condition and locate the various standard marks
  • state and identify required health and safety features on a chainsaw
  • identify faults and defects on a chainsaw and cutting equipment and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineer's attention
  • select and identify correct tools to enable maintenance to be carried out and report on their serviceability
  • carry out correctly all routine maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction book and/or the Lantra workbook
  • prepare the chainsaw for use with the correct fuel/oil mix and chain lubrication
  • start the chainsaw from both cold and hot in a safe manner
  • carry out pre-cutting safety tests and state the procedures if the chainsaw fails these tests
  • state the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
  • cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths
  • assess and explain the terms 'tension' and 'compression' in timber
  • adopt safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar
  • handle and stack timber in a safe manner
  • organise site safety and state the precautions required

Outcome: The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate of competence CS30.

FELLING SMALL TREES

The course is suitable for:- Novice operators who wish to learn how to operate chainsaws for the felling of healthy trees of up to 380mm in diameter at felling height. The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate of competence CS31. (Those attending this course must hold certificate CS30).

Duration: For novices, 3 to 4 days. For experienced users, three days.

Maximum trainees: 4

Price:-£500 per head for 4 day course. (Discounts available)

Course Objectives: At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • identify types of timber, potential hazards and stresses, correctly assess if timber is in compression or tension, and select the appropriate technique to deal with the particular situation
  • correctly assess the situation prior to free felling a straight open grown tree up to a maximum of 380mm diameter, and with the aid of wedges and/or a felling lever, fell it in a chosen direction
  • remove limbs from felled trees and cross cut, handle and stack timber in a safe and efficient manner
  • take down hung up trees using hand tools
  • recognise situations where specialist help is required

Outcome: The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate of competence CS31. (Those attending this course must hold certificate CS30)

 

Advanced Chainsaw Operation Felling Medium Trees

The course is suitable for:- those who are required to operate chainsaws to fell trees between 380mm and 760mm diameter at felling height, hollow/rotten trees, or who are required to use a winch to assist with the take down of hung up trees. (Those attending this course must hold certificates CS30 & CS31). The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate CS32.

Duration: Two days

Maximum trainees: 4

Price:-£250 per head. (Discounts available)

Course Objectives: At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • State the regulations and safety requirements relating to chainsaw use
  • Assess trees to be felled for hazards and risks
  • Use appropriate techniques and aids to take down trees
  • De-limb trees using appropriate safe techniques
  • Cross-cut safely to correct lengths
  • Handle and stack timber
  • Fell large trees between 1 and 2 times the guide bar length, ie 380mm to 760mm using correct cuts, stance, and felling aids
  • Take down of trees using winches

Outcome: The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate of competence CS32. (Those attending this course must hold certificates CS30 & CS31).

Dealing with Individual Windblown trees

The course is suitable for:- People who are required to deal with individual windblown trees. The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate of competence CS32. (Those attending must hold NPTC certificates CS30, CS31 & CS32).

Duration: One day

Maximum trainees: 4

Course Objectives: At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • State the regulations and safety requirements related to the use of chainsaws
  • Assess lying windblown and broken timber and make decisions on appropriate action
  • Cut windblown trees using appropriate techniques
  • Operate a winch to control movement of root plates

Outcome:- The price includes assessment for NPTC certificate CS34. (Those attending must hold NPTC certificates CS30, CS31 & CS32).
